I remember when
I was in Eight grade, I was a 13 years old girl and I make a mistake in terms
of vocabulary, remember that I had a task about some words one of them was “bomba”
and for that word I got the word bomb instead of balloon; I have to recognize
that my teacher corrects me in a softly way but in that time I realized how
important are languages and that day my interest in English appears, because
the previous years I seen English as another subject but since that day,
English was the most important subject for me, the day that I had to see
English I was really happy all the day, and I felt good in the class.
The time passed,
and the next year in nine grade, we were told about “Media Tecnica” for ten and
eleven grade, it is a program given for the Ministry of Education to increase
the English proficiency and prepare students for work field; in that program
you see more hours of English compare with the other grades, when you are in the
Media Tecnica you have to see more or less 16 hours of classes per week, 8 in
the morning and 8 in the afternoon, and when you are not in the Media Tecnica,
you just have to see 3 hours of classes per week. I became so excited when the
teachers told about that and the I got nervous when they informed us that to
enter to the Media Tecnica you have to present an exam, if you have a good
score in that test you are in but if you do not you are out. I remember that
from the day we were told about that I started study and image it was just the beginning
of the year, the test was in October and I started to study in my free time, in
order to get a really good score, I remember that the day of the exam arrives,
all of nine graders were in a room presenting that exam, we were about 82
students presenting the exam, I was really nervous and why if I do not get a
good score? I would get so sad but that I remember that before enter to the
classroom my teacher called me and say “stay calm, you are going to do it well”
in that way, I entered in that classroom with confidence after my teacher told
me that; that day I have English in the last hour at 11:05am, I was in class
and suddenly my teacher told me to get out of the classroom because we have to
talk about something, for me it was really strange because what did she have to
tell me? When I went out, she came out behind me, and told me that she had
managed to get my results ahead of schedule, I was really surprised because
these results come out one week before the end of the year, she did not tell me
the results in a specific number but she told me that “You are in the Media
Tecnica” I began to cry, yes crying but due to the happiness that I felt in
that moment, I have achieved one really important goal, immediately when I
realized, my teacher was crying too, she was really happy too because of me,
and said me “you are for great things”.
The year ended
and I was excited for have my first class in Media Tecnica, when 2015 starts,
it was really difficult in terms of the others subjects but in terms of English
everything was perfect in the morning we learned about grammatical rules but my
teacher managed the class for not to get us bored and in the afternoon we
learned in a funny way because we sang songs, we make role plays and so on, in
summary, my two last years of secondary school were good, excellent I will say.
When Icfes
results came out, I thought about studying International Bussiness but I also
have in mind continue with English, so I decided to go for the English route.
In 2016, I
entered to the degree in English at Usco university, and I have to accepted
that I did not want to be teacher at first but then in third semester when our
professors told us about the profession, I realized how cool and nice were my English
teachers at school and I remember that I love English thanks to them, so I
started to take into account the idea to be a professor, in my fourth semester
I received a call from a relative telling me that there was an English teacher
vacancy in the school where she worked, I accepted immediately, it was in 2017,
and I start to work with primary learners, they were learners from seven years
to ten years old, everything was funny, kids give you energy and happiness,
believe it is very rewarding to see how your students love you, how our
students rejoice when they have English, in that time I confirm that I wanted
to be a teacher, I continue giving my classes but of course for that time I
have been learning a lot of approaches and method, and definitely the most that
I like and implement is about communicative language, more than transmit
knowledge to students, we have to encourage them to face real situations and be
able to communicate at any moment; in 2019 I received another proposal to work
in another school, it was very gratifying to see how they said that my work had
been recommended and that I was a very good teacher and they wanted me in that
school, so I accepted, in that way I have the work with primary school and now
this one, it was a private school, and I have to teach to four years learners,
yes, they were babies and it was really good, I remember when in teaching English
to children, the professor told us about the importance of teaching English to
children in a very young age, and in fact, yes is really important, they get
the language really fast and remember the things all the times, also, the tips
that the professor gave us help me a lot, because they were kid of four years
old, they always like to play, and in fact we play while we learn, they love me
and I feel really good with my work when I could go to teach one class and they
asked me like why you didn’t come? I got sad because you didn’t come and yes
they were kids talking to me in that way, unfortunately I have to quit work, I
was about to begin my teaching practicum and the schedule did not help me, my
students got very sad when I told them that I was leaving but I have to, I can not
say good to them, if I do so, they will start to cry and me too and I did not
want so.
Now, this year,
at this time, I am in my teaching practicum, and it have been amazing, this is
my first time working with young people, adolescent and it is really cool, I
have had a good acceptance from my students, at the beginning I thought it
could be difficult because when my cooperative teacher told them that I going to
be their teacher from September to November they seemed to dislike the idea,
even they looked at me very badly but now, we have a good rapport, they have
told me that they like my classes and that if it is possible they want me to
continue being their teacher the next year.
At this point
of my life, in my twenties, I have to say to I am proud of being a teacher, an
English teacher, and I want to do it for a very long time, I want to continue
feeling so happy when my students say that they like my classes, and also have
that good feeling when some say me “you are a good teacher”
